How to measure your PD

Finding the right pair of glasses isn't just about choosing a frame that complements your face; it's also about ensuring they fit correctly. One essential measurement for a proper fit is your Pupillary Distance (PD), which is the distance between the centers of your pupils in millimeters. This measurement is crucial for the correct alignment of your prescription to your eyes. If it's not included on your prescription (RX) from your eye doctor, don't worry! Here's how you can obtain your PD.

Measure Your Own PD

We have a PD measurement tool right on our website. All you need is a camera! You don't need specialized equipment to measure your PD; a simple millimeter ruler will do the trick. Stand in front of a mirror, or ask a friend to help, and place the ruler directly over your eyes. Measure the distance from one pupil's center to the other's center. The average adult's PD ranges from 54mm to 74mm, while children's PD typically ranges between 43mm and 58mm. For greater accuracy, repeat the measurement a few times and take the average. You can also take a credit card, hold it up to your face, mark where your eyes are and measure that!

Request Your PD from Your Eye Care Provider

Your eye care provider should have your PD measurement from when they performed your eye exam. It's common for patients to request this information, especially if they plan to order eyewear online. While some providers may hesitate to give out PD measurements, fearing you'll purchase glasses elsewhere, it's your right to have all the details of your prescription. Don't hesitate to ask!

Visit a new Eye Care Professional (ECP)

If you need more confidence in your ability to measure your PD or you prefer a professional to do it, you can always visit an eye care professional. They have the tools and expertise to measure your PD accurately. This is also a good opportunity ask any questions you might have about your eye health.

Remember, having the correct PD ensures that your lenses will be properly centered over your eyes, which is crucial for clear, comfortable vision. Whether you measure it yourself, request it from your existing provider, or visit a new ECP, taking the time to obtain an accurate PD measurement will make a world of difference in your eyewear experience.
