Lutein and Zeaxanthin Explained

Eye Candy and its Antioxidants

The recent release of Eye Candy, a multi-formula vision supplement, has brought a lot of excitement to the gaming community. With natural ingredients and the ability to replenish nutrients to improve macular pigment and prevent the harmful effects of blue light, we’ve once again put the health and wellness of gamers first. At the heart of Eye Candy are two powerful antioxidants, lutein and zeaxanthin. Considering that neither may be discussed around too many kitchen tables, the American Optometric Association (AOA) will help us explain further what they are, and how they can improve your eye health in their ‘Diet and Nutrition’ article.

The Science

According to the AOA, lutein and zeaxanthin are defined as “important nutrients found in green leafy vegetables, as well as other foods, such as eggs. Many studies show that lutein and zeaxanthin reduce the risk of chronic eye diseases, including age-related macular degeneration and cataracts.” Regarding their effectiveness, AOA notes that the National Eye Institute performed a study called the Age-Related Eye Disease Study (AREDS) that concluded “taking an antioxidant vitamin or mineral supplement reduced the risk of advanced AMD progression by about 25 percent and showed a 19 percent reduction in visual acuity loss in some of the subjects.” In this case, AMD refers to age-related macular degeneration, which, along with cataracts, are the leading causes of visual impairments and acquired blindness in the US according to AOA.

As critics may suggest and the AOA notes, lutein and zeaxanthin carotenoids were not assessed due to lack of commercial availability in the original AREDS report since it could not trace what specific vitamin/mineral/combination was the source of such strong results. However, The AREDS Report No. 22 from 2007 affirms that high dietary intake of lutein and zeaxanthin is connected with reduced risk of advanced AMD, among other ailments according to AOA. The article also states that AREDS2 (begun June 2008) “builds on a multitude of existing science supporting lutein and zeaxanthin's role in maintaining healthy eyes. It is the largest human clinical trial to evaluate lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega-3 fatty acids supplementation and includes 4,000 patients at high risk for AMD.”

Servings and Cataract Prevention

As more mainstream subjects for subjects for science study, it is clear that the consumption of this antioxidants can have incredible effects. Looking closer at eye health, the AOA concludes that the human body does not naturally make the proper amount of either that the body needs. This is why nutrition is important, and Eye Candy serves as an accessible and tasty solution to fulfill that need. An increase in the consumption of green vegetables can help according to AOA (also citing that recent studies suggest that 10mg/day of a lutein supplement and 2 mg/day of a zeaxanthin supplement reap benefits), but it is fair to say that many don’t eat enough green vegetables. Knowing this, Gamer Advantage is excited to report that each serving of Eye Candy has that exact breakout of lutein and zeaxanthin.

Related to cataracts, the AOA states that the oxidation of the lens is a major contributor to cataracts, and in relation to lutein and zeaxanthin, these likely contribute to cataract prevention by neutralizing free radicals associated with oxidative stress and retinal damage. The article goes on to cite multiple studies including the Nurses’ Health Study, the Health Professional Follow-Up Study and the five-year follow-up to the Beaver Dam Eye Study that positively look at the consumption of lutein and zeaxanthin and their effect on cataracts. More information is shared on the results of these studies within the AOA source link.

Bottom Line

In addition to Gamer Advantage glasses, Eye Candy provides the gaming community with another solution to pursue healthy eyes and general wellbeing. By actively pursuing and releasing ways to fight eye strain, poor sleep, AMD, cataracts and much more, we continue to appreciate the feedback we receive and hear how the daily lives of gamers has changed. Like our glasses, there is much research behind lutein and zeaxanthin, and we’re happy to bring these tested solutions to gamers. Unlike blue light glasses are aren’t clinically proven and other supplements that are filled with fake ingredients, gamers can be at ease with what they put their trust in with us, and that means the world.
