You look around and see brighter colors, feel cooler temperatures, and sip your pumpkin spice latte. It’s official, fall is here, or is it autumn, we can't decide!
It doesn’t matter what you call the season wedged between summer and winter. It also doesn’t matter if you experience the cooler temps and brighter colors. What matters most is the answer to this question: Why aren’t you wearing your sunglasses as often?
A recent survey conducted by Morning Consult on behalf of the vision council stated that adults’ sunglass use drops by nearly 20% between summer and fall. To rub salt in the wound, only 60% of us gamers wear sunglasses on a regular basis. That means when fall blows in, only about half of us are wearing the necessary eye protection.
Here are the top 3 reasons why sunglasses are important in autumn.
1.The sun has shifted.
In the fall, the sun sits lower in the sky due to “The Fall Equinox”. The sun sits closer to the horizon, and this increases potential exposure to harmful UV rays. The sun's position offers a more direct path to your eyes.
2.The glare is blinding!
Because the sun is lower in the sky and in a more direct path to your eyes, the glare can be very intense this time of year. A high quality, polarized sun lens can help minimize glare. Glare is dangerous and in fact a life threatening car accident is 16% more likely when glare is involved.
3.Things are cooling off.
During this time of year the air is cold, windy, and dry. This combination can quickly irritate the eye. The cooler days can cause the oils in tear film to thicken, which can lead to dry/irritated eyes. The high winds combined with reduced humidity can also damage your eyes and skin from the dust and debri being kicked up. A properly fit pair of glasses can help combat the elements.
In summary, it's important to remember that sunglasses are important all year round. Knowing that many of us tend to forget our shades this time of year, use this list as a friendly reminder. Watch for future blogs with more tips for your eyes as we get closer to winter!
